CYCLAMEN

The biggest secret in gardening circles in Australia is the species cyclamen. Long flowering periods and beautifully marked leaves throughout most of the year should make it an essential plant in southern gardens. This list represents nearly all known species, all very easy outdoors.

balearicum Small slightly tender spring flowerer. Pretty little white flowers and beautifully marbled heart-shaped leaves. Naturally small tubers. Very few FS/1st $5.00

coum Plain leaf/white flowers. As above but the flowers are clean snowy white with a dark pink “nose”. Very Few FS $3.50

coum Dark flowers/dark leaves. A new vigorous strain released by us with dark leaves and flowers. Most have semi-double flowers, which flatten out rather than reflex making them look like Mexican sombreros! FS/1st $5.00

coum ssp caucasicum The more eastern variant of the coum aggregate and a most distinct race. Originally sent to Kath Dryden from Moscow Botanic Garden and labelled from Abschasica. Overall, these plants throw larger pointier flowers and have heart shaped, boldly patterned leaves. FS $5.00

coum “Silver Leaf Strain” A stunning selection guaranteed to satisfy the most discerning gardener. Bone hardy, large pink flowers in winter and silver leaves, some with a deep green edge or central “Xmas tree” markings. FS $4.00

elegans
Long considered an extreme form of C.coum and the centre of much debate, it is now afforded “good species” rank . Very distinct with its large, elongated, acute, pink petals and narrow heart-shaped leaves. The form on offer, given to us as a single tuber by Otto Fauser, has brilliant silver leaves and is the best by far that we have ever seen. FS/1st $10.00

hederifolium “Stargazer” Un-flowered seedlings of an unusual and recent novelty of this highly decorative and resilient cyclamen. As the name suggests the “necks’ are outstretched sending the flower face-upwards instead of down. Large white flowers have a lipstick pink “nose” and from a distance the effect is of a nest of hatchlings straining up to catch their parents offerings! FS/1st $4.00

hederifolium "Ruby Glow" Darkest pink selection of this classic autumn flowering race. At its best it bears a succession of strong magenta pink flowers throughout autumn and marbled leaves for almost the rest of the year. FS/1st $5.00

hederifolium “Silver Leaf” An especially fine strain with unmarked or just faintly marked broadly arrow-head shaped leaves of silver and sage green. A lovely foil to early flowering crocus, like C. goulimyi and C. niveus. FS $4.00

intaminatum Plain leaf Flowers here from December to June. Never really dormant! A real miniature for a raised bed or pot bearing nearly white flowers, sometimes pale pink, with silver-grey veins. Small tubers. FS $5.00

persicum The true wild species from which all florist selections have been made. Though not as flamboyant as their overblown sisters, their large white and pink flowers have the edge in poise, possess a beautiful scent and can be easily grown outdoors. FS/1st $5.00

purpurascens An evergreen woodlander which requires no dormancy. Its large, fragrant, carminepink flowers, borne mostly in summer, provides the genus with an all year round blooming cycle. Enjoys dappled shade. FS/1st $6.00

repandum ssp repandum Carmine-pink flowers with dramatically twisted petals on long stems and large heart-shaped leaves, an elegant spring flower for shaded woodland conditions. FS $4.00

rhodium ssp peleponnesiacum One of the true gems of the genus and a must for collectors and gardeners alike. Unmistakably distinct with its large, lobed, mid-green leaves, splashed cream and white, and its luminous pale pink flowers. Naturally small tubers. Limit of 1 per customer. FS/1st $12.00
