AURICULAS AND PRIMULAS
A valuable group of alpines that are little seen in Australia. All those listed require well-drained,
good loam or clay-based soils to do well. If they are to be used in pots or troughs then use a low
fertility loam based compost to which can be added extra lime and some slow release Osmocote.
To prevent stem and leaf rot provide a collar of grit or pebbles around the neck of the plant.

Edges
White edge We believe our offering to be 'James Arnot'. The dark 'body' has a striking white edge

Selfs

Alice Haysom Dark cardinal red self raised by C.G. Haysom and Hew Dalrymple in 1935. This is
an extremely hardy and beautiful variety and one of the best show selfs to start a collection with. Limit of 1 per customer $10.00 |

Chorister An unusually deep yellow self recommended by the doyenne of auricula growers,
Brenda Hyatt, for its "vigour, charm and consistency". $10.00 |

Old Gold A new offering from an English import, Old Gold was raised by James Douglas prior to
1940. An unusual colour, Mary Robinson describes it as 'chrome-yellow with a bronze tint'. It is a
very good 'doer' and with us has flowers over a 6 month period. $10.00 |

Apple Isle Green-edged fancy variety bearing delightful green edged flowers with a burgundy
center above bright green leaves throughout the year. A very strong grower and an excellent

Barnhaven Cowichan polyanthus
These were bred by Florence Bellis and introduced into the Barnhaven catalogue in 1949. Vigorous
plants with burnished foliage, they are happy to be divided. They tend to flower in winter and early
spring and go into dormancy when the soil dries in summer. Our offerings this year are originally
from our friend Sally Johannsohn.

Barnhaven gold laced primula A delightful old fashioned friend with a striking gold edge on a

Primula allionii 'Ethel Barker' A very neat, free flowering hybrid with compact pale green foliage

Primula allionii 'Beatrice Wooster' Compact green leaves with uniform serrations at the margins

Primula auricula These are mixed hybrids and offer a good start to the world of auricula growing.
If we had the space we would keep them all ourselves! Some may have farina and colours vary,
mostly in the blue/pink/mauve range. $6.00

above a neat rosette of soft hairy leaves. This Himalayan treasure goes back to a resting bud over

Primula bulleyana A species of candelabra
primula with whorls of orange flowers on tall stems,
opening from the bottom upwards. Does best in damp soil in a sunny spot, although will tolerate
some shade. Discovered in Yunnan in the same year as Primula beesiana, by George Forrest in

Primula concholoba A dainty plant from S.E. Tibet. Small heads of farinated violet/blue flowers
sit atop 15 cm. stems. The furry leaf rosettes persist over winter in a reduced form. $6.00 |

Primula florindae The largest in its genus and endemic to SE Tibet this bears huge umbels of
up to 80 fragrant, sulphur-yellow bells hanging on mealy stalks atop stems of up to 80cm high in

Primula frondosa The leaves are heavily mealed, almost white, in spring but become greener as
summer progresses. The generous flower heads are lilac-pink with a pronounced yellow eye. The
old leaves die back in autumn leaving a tight farinose resting bud. $6.00

Primula halleri Similar to P. frondosa but of a rather more delicate appearance. A native of stony
European alpine meadows. $6.00 |
Primula japonica alba Crisp white form of the Japanese Primrose, a very easy, long-lived species
bearing clusters of scalloped-edge yellow/pink-eyed flowers arranged candelabra fashion in
whorls on stout 50cm stems. Prefers woodland or moist, peaty soil in part sun. Flowers in late

Primula japonica "Miller?Äôs Crimson" A fine rich-red strain of this species making robust clumps of
red-ribbed, light-green leaves from which emerge 50cm candelabras of large, deep red flowers.

Primula x kewensis This hybrid originally occurred at RBG Kew. The pale green leaves are heavily

Primula marginata 'Linda Pope' Attractive rosettes of deeply serrated silver-edged leaves with a

Primula poissonii From Szechwan and Yunnan this is a superb candelabra species for a cool,
moist site bearing whorls of large, yellow-eyed, rich purplish-crimson flowers on 50cm stems. $5.00 |
Primula sikkimensis An elegant species bearing several whorls of soft yellow flowers on 50cm
stems over stiff, narrow upright leaves. Suited to moist woodland. $5.00

Primula waltonii A very beautiful species with slightly bluish-green leaves and bearing on long
slender stalks, umbels of very lovely, lampshade-shaped flowers in strawberry-pink to wine-red
and violet. These are said to be scented of fruit drops though we cannot verify this! Flowers early
summer and prefers moist cool conditions. 40cm $6.00 |
Primula wilsonii Along with P. poissonii this is one of the few evergreen species of candelabra
primula. A native of Yunnan and Szechuan it bears whorls of very fragrant, yellow throated, velvetypurple
campanulate bellflowers on erect, 80cm high stems. Stiff, slightly pleated leaves. Cool,
moist woodland conditions. $6.00
